Consumers May Soon Receive Insurance Cancellation Letters
Companies Move to Comply with Health Care Mandates
(Washington, D.C.) – Last year, millions of consumers nationwide received notices from their insurers that their plans were not compliant with the mandates of the Affordable Care Act (ACA), also known as Obamacare, and would be canceled. In the face of widespread public opposition, the president unilaterally deferred these mandates for an additional two years, but at the discretion of states. Some states have elected not to observe the 2 year extension, and some insurance companies themselves are preparing to comply with the law. As a result, consumers around the country are expected to again begin receiving cancelation letters. This is in addition to the millions more who are expected to lose their employer-provided health care in the coming years due to the law. These families will find themselves among the millions forced to seek insurance on the Healthcare.gov website, which is still experiencing glitches.
Daniel Garza, Executive Director of The LIBRE Initiative, released the following statement:
"Last year, millions of Americans were outraged to learn that the most basic promise about health care reform – 'if you like your health care, you can keep it' – was simply not true. And the impacts from that 'lie of the year' are only expected to continue. In the face of an angry public, the White House granted a temporary reprieve from this effect of the president's health care law. But the effect still persists, and unless it is not repealed or reformed, this part of the law is eventually going to be enforced. And that means canceled policies, costlier care, lost doctors, and expensive mandates for millions of families.
Just like last year, the new enrollment period under the law will feature many people disappointed to be forced to deal with the broken promises under the law. The president's supporters in Congress – the people who refuse to insist on a meaningful effort to address these problems – should realize this issue is not going to go away. It must be dealt with – sooner, rather than later."
