Congress Must Agree to Debate DHS Funding, Reform Immigration

(Washington D.C.)  – With President Obama’s executive action on Immigration having created a standstill in Congress, it is unclear when and how Congress will act to fund the Department of Homeland Security (DHS) for the remainder of the year. Without a debate on this appropriations legislation, some in Washington are proposing separate votes on funding DHS and blocking the president’s Immigration orders. With funding due to expire at the end of the week, the president is headed to Miami for a national televised town hall.

Daniel Garza, Executive Director of the LIBRE Initiative, released the following statement:

“We have said all along that until Congress and the president find a way to work together on Immigration , these problems will continue to arise. The president has taken actions that a court may rule unlawful, and now Congress is being prevented from even debating legislation to fund important federal functions. All the while, the president aims to gain support from U.S. Latinos for his attempts to ignore the legislative process set forth by our Constitution during a national townhall in Miami rather than focusing his efforts on securing a compromise with Congress by this week’s deadline. It’s time to get back to the business of legislating, which includes passing funding measures and real Immigration reform. Those goals require the president’s active involvement. Congress and the president must work in a bipartisan spirit to resolve the Immigration crisis via the established legislative and rule-making process. Now is not the time for political posturing. Both sides need to work together.”
