Bipartisan Legislative Fix for Dreamers Must Remain the Goal

(Washington, D.C.) – Today Senators and Members of Congress are expected to vote to end the partial shutdown of the federal government that began over the weekend. Immigration remains a focus, as many lawmakers seek a compromise to provide permanent legislative relief for the Dreamers, which can be signed into law by the president. As part of the discussion regarding funding of the government, it is expected that the Senate will vote in the near future on legislation to provide relief to the Dreamers.

Daniel Garza, President of The LIBRE Initiative, released the following statement:

“Lawmakers and advocates for the immigrant community should avoid being distracted by the current rhetoric in Washington, and instead focus on the legislative goal. The young people brought here as children – who today are workers, students, and men and women in our military – face uncertainty and worry. It is harder for them to plan and save for a better future for their families, and that weakens our communities. Presidents of both parties have, so far, been unable to bring Republicans and Democrats together on a plan that delivers permanent relief to the Dreamers, so our nation can be stronger.

Congress should seize the current opportunity and agree on a narrow compromise that solves the matter at hand: certainty and security. That needs to be the focus – bringing lawmakers together on a compromise that provides permanent relief to the Dreamers, while enhancing border security.”
