“Latino Enrollment Week” Focuses on Saving Flawed Healthcare Law
Millions May Face Penalty for Not Purchasing Federally-Mandated Policy
(Washington, D.C.) – Today marks the beginning of “Latino Enrollment Week,” when the White House and its allies will focus on signing up Latinos in the exchanges established under the Affordable Care Act, also known as Obamacare. So far Hispanics have declined to participate in significant numbers, and just five weeks remain before enrollment closes.
The poor rollout of the law and the lack of affordable options have led to a significantly lower number of participants overall than projected, which may threaten the stability of the system. To help reduce losses by participating insurance companies and to help keep the law viable, supporters are focused on enrolling more young and healthy people. With a median age of just 27, Hispanics are high on the list.
Daniel Garza, Executive Director of The LIBRE Initiative released the following statement:
“The administration made promises that this law would save Latinos $2,500 per household; it hasn’t. They promised the law would improve choice of doctors; it certainly didn’t. The President himself also promised Americans that if they liked their current plan they could keep it; they couldn’t. And supporters of the law asserted the reform would help the most vulnerable; it’s made things worse – especially for Hispanics, the young and the middle class, groups who are struggling to make ends meet in this weak economy. This late push to enroll Latinos is less about promoting their well-being and more about saving a deeply-flawed law.
In 2008, Candidate Obama argued against a legal requirement to purchase insurance. He said that if people were given a good deal on affordable care, they would buy it. As President, he changed his position – and now insists that the millions of Americans who cannot afford this law pay a tax penalty. This is why the law isn’t working, and it’s why Latinos are rejecting it: they know the correct approach is to offer them a good deal that meets their needs – not to deputize the IRS to force them."
