Reform our Immigration Laws Now

(Arlington, VA) – Today the House of Representatives defeated immigration legislation that would protect the Dreamers and make other reforms to immigration laws. In recent days, some have suggested that Congress should delay action on immigration legislation until after another election.

Daniel Garza, president of The LIBRE Initiative, released the following statement:

“It is discouraging that Congress has yet to pass a bipartisan solution to provide certainty for Dreamers and even less, to start the process of updating immigration laws that have not been revised in decades. Relying on political outcomes and unilateral executive action to fix our broken immigration system simply does not work; Congress must act.

The country is ready for real leadership to reform our laws and establish a system that is efficient and orderly, and that ensures America is ready for the future. Reforming our laws can prioritize admission of those who will make our communities and nation stronger and protect our border – without depriving people of appropriate due process protections, indefinitely detaining families or changing America’s ideal of welcoming those yearning to breathe free.

The sooner we begin that debate, the better. This issue is not going away. It is encouraging to see those leaders who are committed to advancing action on this important topic. The American people will continue to look for leaders who are willing to act – by reaching across the aisle on commonsense solutions.”
