Youth Steer Clear of Enrolling in Obamacare
Spanish-Language site as poorly executed as the law itself, yet penalties remain
(Washington, D.C.) – This week numerous major news outlets – including the Associated Press, the Washington Post, National Review, the Palm Beach Post, and others – have reported on the serious problems with Cuidadodesalud.gov, the Spanish language site launched by the Administration to help the Spanish-speaking community enroll for health insurance under the Affordable Care Act (ACA), also known as Obamacare. But the site was launched late – two full months after the law's October 1st launch – but plagued with problems. These include bad translation, missing pages, sign up forms in English and technical problems.
But the main problems continue to stem from the law itself, which was also poorly executed as well. New data from the Administration indicated that only 24% of enrollees are the coveted 18-34 year olds. That is too few young people signing up to keep insurance rates from going up.
Daniel Garza, Executive Director of The LIBRE Initiative released the following statement:
"It is no surprise that young people are steering clear of this law. It is unfair to them, especially young Hispanics, of whom 28% are 'Millennials' and have to pay far more for insurance to keep costs down for others. It is also proving to be unfair to Spanish speakers whom the Administration has placed in the back-burner once more by failing to provide a functional site. The problems with Cuidadodesalud.gov are just more evidence that the needs of patients have been an afterthought throughout this entire process. The Spanish-language website was launched months late, and has never truly worked properly. And despite this inadequate access, people who do not buy insurance will still be forced to pay a tax penalty. Millions have had their policies cancelled because they don't comply with new federal mandates. And all of these changes are implemented in a way that harms economic growth and costs jobs.
Given all the negative impacts of this flawed law, it's also no surprise that the concerns of Latinos received little attention during and after the launch. As a result, of these broken promises, millions are now scrambling to figure out how to provide health care for themselves and their families and fewer Hispanics approve of the President's handling of the nation's healthcare. It is time to address the mistakes and seek real health care solutions."
