Uninsured Increasingly Disapprove of Health Care Law

(Washington, D.C.) - According to a new poll from the Kaiser Family Health Foundation, just 22 percent of uninsured Americans have a favorable view of the Affordable Care Act (ACA), also known as Obamacare. Fifty-six percent have an unfavorable opinion of the law. Last September - before full implementation of the law got underway - more uninsured Americans approved of the law than disapproved.  The law is now even less popular with the uninsured than it is with Americans overall.

This stunning rejection of the law by the demographic it was intended to help raises serious questions about whether it can ever achieve intended coverage goals. By the government's own estimate, 31 million will remain uninsured by 2024. There has also been a significant increase in the percentage of Americans who say that someone in their family has been negatively impacted by the health care law - which now stands at 29 percent.

Furthermore, as the March 31 deadline for enrolling under the law gets closer, the Administration's previous metrics for determining the success of the law are being amended. While Secretary Sebelius said in September that the goal was to have "at least 7 million" people signing up for care, she now denies that was ever a goal.  The White House is also backing off of earlier targets for young and healthy enrollments. These targets are important for a variety of reasons, among them that health care exchanges may not be fiscally stable if they are not reached.

Daniel Garza, Executive Director of The LIBRE Initiative released the following statement:

"It's an extremely troubling sign that the number of uninsured Americans who oppose the health care law continues to grow as more time passes and the more they learn about it. We were told that this costly new system would dramatically expand coverage. But that will not be achieved if the people without insurance are turned away by a system that they view as unworkable or too expensive.

It's time for an honest discussion about how to improve health care for all Americans. The health care law is bringing higher rates, higher deductibles, narrow provider networks, costly new mandates, and higher taxes. It is not what the American people were promised."
