Uninsured Americans Say ACA a Bad Idea
Few "Young Invincibles" Intend to Enroll

(Washington, D.C.) - Poll after poll shows uncertainty amongst Americans and their intent to enroll in healthcare plans under the Affordable Care Act (ACA), also known as Obamacare. Only 24 percent of Americans who do not have health insurance believe the law is a good idea says the NBC/Wall Street Journal poll. Half of them consider it a bad idea, and a full 56 percent say it will have a negative effect on the nation's health care system. This is a stark contrast from the 31% who thought it was a bad law when it was signed in 2010. It also demonstrates a shocking loss of faith in the measure in precisely the demographic it was intended to help. The finding suggests that a significant percentage of those who lack insurance simply don't see it as a good investment.

A separate survey by the Harvard Institute of Politics shows that just 30 percent of uninsured people aged 18-29 indicated that they intend to enroll in coverage under the law. Without the participation of these "Young Invincibles," the health insurance exchanges created under the ACA are in danger of going into a "death spiral" as older and sicker consumers dominate enrollment, driving up costs and premiums.

Daniel Garza, Executive Director of The LIBRE Initiative released the following statement:

"The President's health care reform law may have been well-intentioned, but it is simply not working as promised. Younger and healthier Americans recognize that it forces most of them to pay more than the benefits they would receive and are refusing to sign up. And even those who are uninsured say the law is a bad idea that will harm America's health care system.

The ACA has extremely serious flaws: canceled policies, lost access to doctors, higher premiums, higher deductibles, costly employer mandates, individual penalties and more. It's increasingly clear that the very people it was intended to help do not support it. It's time for the law's supporters in Washington to admit this reality and work seriously to build a workable system."
