Today Marks Important Health Care Deadline
Enrollees Who Auto-Renew May Face Rate Increases

(Washington, D.C.) – Today marks the final day on which individuals may enroll for coverage under the Affordable Care Act (ACA), also known as Obamacare, in order for their plans to be in effect on January 1. Additionally, many who bought insurance under the law in its first year and who do not act to select new plans may find that they have incurred significant rate increases when they are automatically renewed. For that reason, supporters of the law have argued that all enrollees should act to review their plan options before auto-renewal takes effect. Disapproval of the law remains high, with nearly 60 percent of Americans supporting its repeal, and more Hispanics saying they are worse off under the law, according to one recent poll.

Daniel Garza, Executive Director of The LIBRE Initiative, released the following statement:

“Millions of people who enrolled under the new health care law last year are scheduled to be automatically renewed in the second year – leading to rate increases for a significant number of them. This is one feature of a poorly designed health care law that does not respond to consumer preferences, and instead delivers rate increases and fewer choices to all too many.

Many people who do not purchase their insurance plans today will be disappointed in the results in a few weeks. This is brought on by problems that could have been addressed if supporters of the law had made good on their promises to fix it. That hasn’t happened, and consumers will suffer because of it.”
