President looks to Hollywood to sell Obamacare

Bad Deal for Young & Healthy People

(Washington, D.C.) – This week influencers in the entertainment industry, including representatives for talk show host Oprah Winfrey and the Grammy Music Awards, met with White House staff to help promote the increasingly unpopular Affordable Care Act ("Obamacare"). The Administration is set to spend at least 684 million dollars to get the young and healthy to sign up by 2014. Without at least 2.7 million young and healthy additional insurance buyers, the law will cost taxpayers even more and funding will be insufficient to pay for promised new benefits for others. And while the law depends on them purchasing insurance, a survey from the Government Accountability Office released this week adds to the growing body of evidence that their premiums will be far more expensive. It is becoming clearer than ever that President Obama has broken his promise to lower health care costs for most Americans.

Daniel Garza, Executive Director of The LIBRE Initiative released the following statement:

"The Affordable Care Act is failing, and it's clear the White House is in crisis communications mode – including calling in favors with Hollywood to sell people on a bad law. The White House needs millions of young and healthy people to buy insurance at an inflated price so their payments can cover the huge expense of the costly program. But a detailed survey by the non-partisan Government Accountability Office released just this week makes clear that most young and healthy people will see significant price increases for insurance as a result of the law. Many are already unable to afford insurance because the job market is so weak. Now, the law will raise their premium's cost and require them to purchase it, or face a tax penalty. This is wrong and unfair. And considering that the country is almost $17 trillion in debt, American taxpayers should not be footing the bill for one more failed program."
