Poll: Americans Concerned About Health Care Cost, Quality

Supreme Court Considers Religious Freedom Challenge

(Washington, D.C.) – With less than a week remaining in the six-month enrollment period under the Affordable Care Act (ACA), also known as Obamacare, Americans continue to have a deeply negative opinion of the law. According to a new poll, Americans disapprove of the ACA by a margin of 53-41 percent. Only 24 percent say it will make things better for their families, against 41 percent who say it will make things worse. A stunning 60 percent say it will make health care more expensive.

Meanwhile, the Supreme Court today heard arguments regarding a challenge to the law on the grounds that it violates the First Amendment guarantee of religious freedom. While Hobby Lobby currently provides insurance to its workers – which includes coverage for a range of contraceptives - they have argued that the federal mandate imposed by the Administration requires them to cover the cost for additional products which violate their religious views.

Daniel Garza, Executive Director of The LIBRE Initiative, released the following statement:

“There aren’t many Americans happy with how the health care law is working. But both the President and the leader of the Senate say it is working as it should. With insurance companies preparing to announce double-digit rate increases for next year, it’s clear they are out of touch with the worries of most Americans.

Health care reform shouldn’t force Americans to violate their religious views or go out of business – which is the choice Hobby Lobby faces. Instead, reform should protect the care that millions are currently happy with, and expand choices for the rest. It’s time to reexamine all areas of the ACA, and work on bipartisan reforms that protect and strengthen the doctor-patient relationship, and encourage market competition that answers to the consumer – not more government mandates and bureaucratic rules.”
