House Passes Measure to Fund Government, Block Health Care Law

House Passes Measure to Fund Government, Block Health Care Law

Problems with Health Care Law Increase

(Washington, D.C.) – Today, by a vote of 230-189, the House of Representatives passed legislation to keep the federal government open past September 30, but to deny funds needed to implement the Affordable Care Act (also called the ACA or Obamacare). This legislation will be sent to the Senate for debate and amendment. President Obama has promised to veto the bill if it is passed with language to block the ACA. If a funding measure is not signed into law before October 1, much of the federal government will be shut down beginning on that day.

Daniel Garza, Executive Director of The LIBRE Initiative released the following statement:

"The Affordable Care Act is well-intentioned, and was aimed at addressing genuine problems. But this law will not work as promised – especially if the Administration insists on the current schedule for implementation. Literally every day we get new information about the problems with the ACA. This week we learned that some seniors will likely be forced into Medicaid, and that there is a system malfunction on the health care exchanges which may give applicants incorrect prices when they sign up for insurance. And according to the Obama Administration, half as many people will gain insurance in the first year as was previously projected. This law is simply not ready to go into effect.

The vote in the House today reflects the strong public concern with this law. The Senate and the White House should not ignore it."
