House Moves to Fund Government While Immigration Dispute Continues
(Washington, D.C.) – The House of Representatives is reportedly preparing to consider a plan to fund most federal agencies for the remainder of the fiscal year, while provide funding for immigration functions for a period of several months, and hold a symbolic vote regarding the president’s executive order on immigration. Taken together, these measures would be likely to prevent a government shutdown while requiring a future agreement with the White House on immigration procedures and funding. In the absence of such an agreement, further action would be needed to ensure continued funding for immigration.
Daniel Garza, Executive Director for The LIBRE Initiative, released the following statement:
“It’s encouraging that House leaders are acting to responsibly fund the federal government for the remainder of the year. It is important that appropriators in both chambers adhere to the bipartisan spending caps agreed to last year, which have helped decrease the nation’s deficit over the past few years. As this move by the House sets the stage for a debate on immigration in the months ahead, both parties will need to work together to ensure that debate is a productive one, aimed at enacting real solutions. Both will need to reach across the aisle and make concessions in order to achieve that.
At best, the president’s Executive Order is a short-term response to a few of the problems that plague our broken immigration system. The American people recognize the need for broader, enduring reforms that promote economic growth, incorporate market-based initiatives, improve enforcement, address the 11 million here without legal status, and provide relief for those brought here as children through no fault of their own. Congress needs to take advantage of this opportunity to do just that.”
