Hispanics Struggle to Find Meaningful Employment

(Washington, D.C.) – This morning, the Bureau of Labor Statistics reported a Hispanic unemployment rate of 6.4 percent for the month of November, an uptick from last month and a rate that remains above the national average of 5 percent. While the economy added 211k jobs last month, the younger working generation is still struggling, with Hispanic millennials experiencing a rise in their specific unemployment rate to 8.3 percent from 7.53 percent. The involuntary part-time employment rate for Hispanics also edged up to 5 percent, representing over 1 million Hispanic individuals who want to find full-time employment but have only been able to secure part-time jobs.

Daniel Garza, Executive Director for The LIBRE Initiative released the following statement:

“The Hispanic community has been facing uncertain economic conditions for too long. Month after month, the leading economic indicators show an unequal, unstable, and sluggish recovery. Our community continues to be involuntarily pushed into part time jobs, or into unemployment altogether. This is due, in part, by the economic policies of the current administration that burden businesses and individuals, like the Affordable Care Act, out-of-control government spending, and regulations that hinder growth. This month, 273 thousand Americans entered the workforce – we the people are clearly ready to get the economy back on track.  For Washington to keep pace, it needs to work on eliminating barriers of success for the Hispanic community and all Americans, and it starts with a stronger private sector and controlled government spending.”
