Hispanics Hit Hard by Rising Cost of Living
Rising Cost of Basic Necessities Creates Hardships for Working Families
(Washington, D.C.) – This week's report on the Consumer Price Index from the Bureau of Labor Statistics shows how Hispanics – and working families in general – are being hit hard by the rising cost of necessities. According to the report from the Bureau of Labor Statistics, the overall price increase was the greatest since February 2013 – with the cost of electricity, food, shelter, gas, and airline fares contributing to the rise in costs. The cost of food saw its largest increase in nearly 3 years. And the cost of meats, fish, eggs and poultry have hit record highs – with a pound of chicken now costing 50 percent more than it did 10 years ago.
Hispanics – who disproportionately fall into low or middle-income categories – see themselves particularly hit by this increase, as studies have shown they prefer to cook from scratch and spend a greater percentage of their income on groceries than non-Hispanics.
Rachel Campos-Duffy, National Spokesperson of The LIBRE Initiative released the following statement:
"This latest report confirms what Hispanics and all working class Americans already know about the Obama economy. Rising food and energy costs are hurting American families and putting the squeeze on already tight Budget s. The bottom line is: big government, over-regulation, and cronyism are killing jobs and causing the price of many necessities to rise unnecessarily.
When the administration declares a war on coal, it doesn't hurt Al Gore or Leonardo Dicaprio. It hurts the middle class and hard-working Hispanics who are seeing the result of these policies in their gas, Utility and grocery bills. It's especially hard on Hispanics who spend a larger percentage of their incomes on food and make more meals from scratch.
Michelle Obama has spent a lot of time, effort, and federal dollars encouraging Americans to eat healthier, including less fast food and more home-cooked meals. It's ironic that it's her husband's policies that are making it harder for American families to do just that. It's time for the Obama administration to stop governing by ideology and "special Interest " and put the kitchen table concerns of American families first."
