Growing Support for Immigration Reform in Congress

(Washington, D.C.) – A growing number of Members of the House of Representatives are indicating support for measures to tackle the difficult question of how to address the millions present in the United States without legal status. Recently, Representatives Aaron Schock (R-IL) and Adam Kinzinger (R-IL) have spoken of the need to provide legal status to undocumented workers.

These public statements come on the heels of comments from House Speaker John Boehner (R-OH) that he is committed to seeing immigration reform pass this year. Reports say the House could vote on a series of legislative proposals this summer. At that time, the Senate would have the option of passing these bills or seeking a compromise with the House of Representatives.

Daniel Garza, Executive Director of The LIBRE Initiative released the following statement:

"If the President is prepared to work with Congressional leaders, there is an opportunity to enact immigration reform this year. Enacting legislation to put in place a durable, bipartisan solution is the best way to address the serious problems with the current system.

The American people support a streamlined, market-based, employment-driven response to the immigration challenge. Legislation is needed to improve enforcement, fix the system of worker visas, provide relief to children brought to the U.S. through no fault of their own, and address the status of millions here without authorization. It's far past time for the President and leaders in Congress to move from their fixed positions, and meet in the middle on a compromise that works."

Through the ESTAMOS CONTIGO (We are With You) campaign for Immigration reform, The LIBRE Initiative is providing an avenue for constituents to reach out to their Senators and Representative in Congress to work together to pass Immigration reform legislation that is employment-based and market-driven.
