GALLUP Poll: Just 24% Believe ACA Will Improve Health Care for their Families

Many Young People Unfamiliar with the Law

(Washington, D.C.) – On October 1, health insurance exchanges or 'marketplaces' are scheduled to open nationwide under the Affordable Care Act (also called the ACA or Obamacare). To date, just 14 states have agreed to launch their own exchanges, while the federal government will administer exchanges in the rest of the United States. National polls continue to show Americans are not familiar with the particulars of the ACA and are concerned about its ramifications. A recent national Gallup poll shows that young people, in particular, are uninformed about the ACA suggesting it may be extremely difficult to convince many to purchase insurance. Nonetheless, the White House currently plans to go forward with implementing major parts of the law, even as it cancels others.

Daniel Garza, Executive Director of The LIBRE Initiative released the following statement:

"With just five weeks left to go before the White House expects millions of people to begin buying insurance under the Affordable Care Act, Americans still mistrust the law and are unfamiliar with it. According to Gallup, just 24 percent believe the law will make things better for their families. A full 44 percent believe it will make health care in America worse. And while young people are the most highly sought after demographic for signup under the ACA, only 10 percent of young people say they're 'very familiar' with the law.

Millions of Americans are right to be suspect of the ACA given the mounting evidence that the program does not guarantee Americans will keep their doctors, and will cause many to lose their current health plans and pay higher premiums. Additionally, Americans are now being mandated to pay higher taxes to sustain the program, all the while the private sector is having to slash workers' hours and freeze new hires.

It's clear that the Affordable Care Act will not work as was intended when enrollment is set to begin on October 1. And the more people know about it, the more they dislike it, as just 42 percent of those who say they are familiar with the ACA approve of it. This law is not practical and lacks the credibility in the court of public opinion to take on the health and wellbeing on the nation."
