Conservatives, Tea Partiers Support Immigration Reform

(Washington, D.C.) - According to a new national survey of conservative voters who identify with the Tea Party movement, there is strong support for immigration reform in this conservative group. The poll finds that

  • 71 percent of self-identified conservative Republicans said it is important for Congress to act on immigration reform this year, including 69 percent who strongly identify with the Tea Party.
  • 76 percent support a plan to improve enforcement and allow undocumented immigrants already in the country to remain if they pay penalties and back taxes, pass a criminal background check, and learn English and civics - including 73 percent who strongly identify with the Tea Party.
  • 70 percent support a plan that provides legal status or citizenship for undocumented immigrants who pay penalties and back taxes, pass a criminal background check, and learn English and civics - including 67 percent who strongly identify with the Tea Party.
  • 69 percent would vote for a candidate who supports broad reform over one who supports border security only - including 64 percent who strongly identify with the Tea Party.

Daniel Garza, Executive Director of The LIBRE Initiative released the following statement:

"This new national poll confirms what we've known all along - Americans of all types and ideologies support immigration reform. While opponents at times seem the most vocal, they're a small minority.

Conservatives recognize the important contribution immigrants have made to building the greatest country the world has ever known. Millions have fled repression for a better life here in America, where hard work and discipline have always been the key to success - and where everyone can create and fulfill the American Dream. It's no surprise that people who value entrepreneurship, hard work, and fiscal responsibility also see how important it is to help today's immigrants succeed as well."
