Congressional Push to Grant White House Trade Authority
Expanding Trade Will Help Grow the U.S. Economy

(Washington, D.C.) - Granting the president the authority to negotiate new trade deals - a top priority of the new Congressional leadership - will help speed the approval of current trade agreements that are projected to grow our nation's economy by as much as $77 billion. Legislation to give the president Trade Promotion Authority - a power that most presidents have enjoyed in recent years - would help ensure a fair process for Congressional consideration of trade agreements such as the Trans-Atlantic Trade and Investment Partnership (TIPP) and the Trans-Pacific Partnership (TPP).

Jorge Lima, Policy Director of The LIBRE Initiative, released the following statement:

"Trade barriers act like taxes - taxes that raise the cost of selling U.S. products abroad, and that prevent American workers and families from fully enjoying the benefits of competition to lower their cost of living. It's important to establish a more even playing field - one where influential companies and industries are prevented from using the power of government to protect themselves from competition. It's no surprise that lowering trade barriers has been a top bipartisan priority for decades.

It's encouraging that Congressional leaders recognize the importance of this ongoing effort and are willing to work with the president on measures that will help boost the nation's economy. The time has come to act on it. That should be a top priority for leaders in Washington - one that people in both parties can agree on."
