Barely Half of Uninsured Plan to Get Insurance
Study: Far Fewer Medicaid Enrollees than Claimed

(Washington, D.C.) A survey of uninsured Americans by Gallup shows that just 23 percent have visited the federal health care site – Healthcare.gov – or one of the state exchanges. The same poll finds that 53 percent of all uninsured plan to purchase insurance, while 38 percent intend to pay the tax penalty for people who do not buy a policy that meets government guidelines. Considering that one of the major rationales for the health care law was to ensure all Americans have insurance, it is stunning that nearly 40 percent of all uninsured do not intend to purchase policies at all and that more than 30 million will remain uninsured over the next ten years.  It is also worth noting that many who currently plan to purchase insurance may ultimately not do so, as more than two-thirds of the enrollment window has passed.

This is consistent with other recent evidence that the law is not well-received by those without insurance. CNN has reported that the actual number of new Medicaid enrollees may be as little as one-sixth of what the Administration claims. Furthermore, polls continue to show that uninsured Americans have a negative view of the law.

Daniel Garza, Executive Director of The LIBRE Initiative released the following statement:

"While the American health insurance system can be improved, the answer is not a single comprehensive bill that imposes expensive and burdensome mandates on every individual and many employers. This system has led millions of Americans to lose their insurance, their access to doctors, and their work opportunities. It has imposed $2 trillion in new costs, which will ultimately be paid for by the taxpayers. And those who are supposed to be most helped by the program are clearly rejecting it.

This is not what the American people were promised. Real health care reform would protect the care people have and like, while providing greater access to those without care. It would expand choice, and strengthen the doctor-patient relationship. It would allow people to make their own personal health care decisions, without government interference. And it would not impose trillions of dollars in new costs on the taxpayers."
