Latino Students Hurt by Murkowski, Collins Vote

Latino Students Hurt by Murkowski, Collins Vote

(Washington, D.C.) – Today Senators Susan Collins (R-ME) and Lisa Murkowski (R-AK) declared their intention to oppose the nomination of Betsy DeVos for Secretary of Education. Mrs. DeVos has been saluted for her support of school choice policies, which offer Latinos and others access to a better education and an alternative from chronically failing schools. If DeVos is not confirmed, Latino parents and students across the country are likely to see their hopes for a better future diminish.

Daniel Garza, President of The LIBRE Initiative, released the following statement:

“A quality education is more important than ever to the success of students in the competitive marketplace of the future. With the failure of the School Improvements Grant program to improve our schools – despite the investment of billions of taxpayer dollars – it is time for a new approach. Latinos across the country will benefit if the next Secretary of Education is supportive of states that wish to embrace school choice. Today Senators Murkowski and Collins have turned their backs on those families, and made it more likely that millions of students will remain stuck in the same substandard schools, unable to achieve their American Dream.”

We encourage other Members of the Senate to stand on the side of our children, to make the American Dream possible for all.”
