ICYMI: CNN, NPR, McClatchy, Nevada Independent Report on DACA Mailers
(Washington D.C) – Yesterday, several local and national media outlets reported on the newly launched mailer campaign by The LIBRE Initiative thanking lawmakers who are supportive of a permanent solution for Dreamers and improvements to our border security.
…The mailers are being sent to the districts of vulnerable Republicans and others who have supported immigration compromises this year, which thus far have been unsuccessful, as well as a handful of Democrats who have been particularly active on the issue.
The mailers feature the lawmaker's picture and say, "Thank You (lawmaker) for supporting a permanent solution for Dreamers," a term used to describe the young undocumented immigrants derived from the Dream Act that would protect them. The other side of the mailer encourages voters to thank the lawmaker and urge them to keep working on "certainty for Dreamers (and) security for our borders."
"This stands out. People when they talk about the Koch network ... they point at areas like tax reform, where we've worked very closely with Republican members," said Wadi Gaitan, a spokesman for the LIBRE Initiative. "Here on this issue, we have Democrats where we want to make sure that their constituents are aware that they are working on a permanent solution for DREAMers and on border security. So it certainly is a unique effort."
The LIBRE Initiative's new effort takes place within that context. They will send mailers to more than 100,000 homes, thanking Democrats and Republicans for their work on a legislative fix for DREAMers.
Democratic Reps. Ben Ray Luján and Michelle Lujan Grisham of New Mexico, as well as Democratic Reps. Raul Ruiz and Pete Aguilar of California will be the recipients of this political ad push, as will Sen. Chris Coons, D-Del. Luján is the chairman of House Democrats' campaign committee.
McClatchy: Why a mailer on Dreamers from a 'nonpartisan' Latino group is worrying Democrats
The mailers are exactly what some Democrat groups feared when the LIBRE Initiative started in 2011.
We're always willing to work with anyone who's willing to do the right thing, and are willing to fight for our values on immigration,
Of particular concern to Democrats is the nonprofit arm of the LIBRE Initiative, called the LIBRE Institute. It has given free flu shots, Thanksgiving turkeys, driver's test preparation in Spanish, tax preparation aid, wellness checkups, citizenship classes and other help to the Latino community across 12 states, including Florida, Texas, North Carolina, Arizona and Nevada.
