Five Percent Spending Cut is a Welcome First Step

(Arlington, VA) – Today the president informed members of his Cabinet that they should recommend a spending cut of 5 percent or more for their departments. The move is intended to cut waste and fat from federal spending.

Daniel Garza, President of The LIBRE Initiative, released the following statement:

“This is welcome news. In recent years policymakers have let spending rise unchecked, wasting taxpayer dollars and threatening America’s long-term finances. The federal deficit and national debt have grown because policymakers have refused to set priorities and to manage spending within a reasonable budget. Requiring Cabinet departments to identify and reduce wasteful spending is long overdue. If lawmakers work with the White House to begin to roll back the spending increases we have seen in recent years, it will be a positive first step.”
