First Step Act Cleared for President’s Signature

(Arlington, VA) – Today the House of Representatives followed the Senate in passing the First Step Act on a broad bipartisan vote. It is expected that the president will soon sign this legislation into law.

Daniel Garza, President of The LIBRE Initiative, released the following statement:

“Enactment of the First Step Act is an important bipartisan achievement – an example of how lawmakers and the White House can reach across the aisle to enact important policy advances. This law will create an opportunity for many non-violent offenders in federal prisons to prepare themselves to lead lawful and productive lives once they complete their sentences. Built on reforms that have already proven successful at the state level, it will strengthen families and communities. We thank the many lawmakers and others who supported this effort, and the White House for leadership on this critical issue.”
