DeVos to Testify on Education, School Choice

DeVos to Testify on Education, School Choice

(Washington, D.C.) Today, the Senate Committee on Health, Education, Labor & Pensions hears testimony from Secretary of Education nominee Betsy DeVos. Mrs. DeVos is expected to be discuss her views on how to improve the nation’s schools, including her support for policies of educational choice, which empower parents and students to choose schools where they are most likely to succeed. DeVos’ testimony will come as education advocates around the country prepare to commemorate National School Choice Week.

Daniel Garza, President of The LIBRE Initiative, released the following statement:

“Today more than ever before, a quality education is critical for success in the competitive marketplace. Sadly, many Latino families around the country have no choice but to send their children to a public school which they are assigned. Some of those are failing schools, while others might not have the programs that best suit their individual learning needs – and ultimately, these students wind up unprepared to succeed. The simple fact is that many states lack a realistic, workable option that gives parents the flexibility to select customized learning opportunities and materials, access to innovative charter schools, or opportunity to select private schools that may offer a better education. Mrs. DeVos supports more choice in education and we look forward to hearing how she plans to work with states to address these important challenges – and to give Latinos, and others, an opportunity to succeed.”
